Checking out books:
Who can check out books from the library?
· Any student has the opportunity and is encouraged to check out a book.
· Any parent can check out a book to read to classes as a volunteer.
What can be checked out from the library?
· Books from various sections of Fiction, Nonfiction, Easy Fiction, and Biographies are available to check out of the library. Books can be looked up on the Library Circulation System at https://doddridge.follettdestiny.com. There is no password needed to look up books.
· EBooks can be checked out on any device able to connect with the internet. This is available 24 hours a day. (See eLibrary section below for instructions.)
· Reference books cannot be checked out of the library.
When can students check out books?
· Students can check out books during library class time each week.
· Students can also check out books each morning during open library time from 7:30 to 7:50.
How long can books and eBooks be checked out?
· Books can be kept for one week at a time. Each week a student will update their book. The student can renew and continue to read the book or return the book if completed and check out a new book. By updating the book each week, the student is showing responsibility for the book and his/her agreement to keep the book safe and clean.
· EBooks can be read and returned each time the student logs into Follett Shelf or the book can be acquired in a cyber-backpack for a 2 week span. The eBook can be returned at any time or will be automatically returned at the end of 2 weeks.
What happens if a book is damaged or lost?
· Students are responsible for the books checked out of the library. During library class, students learn important rules that help take care of books. (see below)
· If a book is damaged, take it to the library right away. A book can often be repaired.
· If a book is lost, the library can help locate it by alerting staff of missing titles or suggesting places to look. Often books are found and returned to the library. Books can be experts at hide and seek.
· If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, each situation will be evaluated and need to be reconciled before check out can begin again. Later, if a lost book is found, please return it immediately.
Book Care Rules:
1. Keep books in a SAFE place like your backpack when not in use. Always know where your book is located. Alert the library if a book is lost.
2. Treat a book with respect. Care for the book by keeping it away from food and drink or dirt and rain. Turn pages carefully. Keep books away from small children, pets, and writing utensils.
3. If a book is damaged, return it to the library to be repaired. Do not try to mend it yourself. We have special materials to take care of the books.
4. Bring books to library media class each week to be renewed or returned.
5. Books are meant to be shared. Read books to your parents, family and friends. Let them read the books to you. Share the stories with your friends. Reading is more enjoyable when it can be shared! Enjoy and let your imagination run wild!
***Unfortunately, the unexpected happens. Puppies chew on books, lunches leak in backpacks, younger siblings use them as coloring books, or a book gets lost. If a book is damaged, report the damage and return the book to the library. In many cases, we can mend the book.
